Cayman Islands Construction, Thornton Construction
Company Profile
Thornton Limited, trading as Thornton Construction provides Construction Project Management in the Cayman Islands with a focus on building superior quality into every project. Managers and Site Supervisors must have extensive construction knowledge, with great attention to details.
Monte Thornton, the principal Project Manager, has been involved in property development and building construction since 1991. In 2004 after Hurricane Ivan, he relocated to Grand Cayman from Houston, Texas, and worked on the rebuilding of Ocean Club Condominiums, the largest in Grand Cayman consisting of 141 units. The complete rebuilding of over half the units, as well as major remodeling on all the units, was a project that lasted a fifteen month period. Monte's responsibilities included extensive documentation of all structural works before, during and after to ensure that all building codes were met, and quality workmanship delivered; and coordination of all requests from the individual owners for change orders to upgrade their units, the final inspections with BCQS on completed works, and the final walk-thru and successful signing over of the units to the owners.
Residential projects have included a complete remodel of a home originally built in the 1950's, with an addition of 1100 square feet, raising the ground floor ceiling height by three feet, and adding a second storey.
As the Project Manager for Habitat For Humanity of the Cayman Islands, two houses in West Bay were built with the coordination of paid supervisors and volunteers from several corporations. The homes were constructed of steel and concrete, with two to three bedrooms, baths, kitchen, and living areas to meet building codes that would ensure the home's stability during any hurricane force wind and rain.
Commercial projects include:
- the Dms Broadcasting Centre for its four radio stations, to include a two storey electrical room and IT storm bunker inside of an old steel and metal sheathed building. Extensive interior remodeling involved addition of structural solutions to bring it up to code and to add interior load bearing walls. Exterior renovations included replacing all windows, and updating the façade with Marmaron.
- the Ansbacher House was remodeled with the foyer and staircase new ceramic tile, exterior repairs and repainting, and completely new second floor restrooms. All work was accomplished over a four day Easter weekend.
- Dms House new fourth floor offices and restrooms, with drop ceilings.
- the Atlantic department store interior new walls and renovations.
- a one storey strip shopping center of six commercial units, including all the requirements for handicapped access.
After the November 2008 Hurricane Paloma damage in Cayman Brac, Thornton Construction arrived to prepare bids for owners, and to rebuild homes which were majorly destroyed throughout the island. Current projects include adding structural support to foundation columns for raised floors, and gussets and hurricane strapping to all roof restorations, as well as complete restorations of damaged areas. Bringing all homes and buildings up to building code standards is a priority.
