Thornton Construction requires all staff members to be professional, ethical, moral, honest, drug free and no use of profanity. There is a written test of the English language, measurement understanding, OSHA standards, safety on the use equipment and job site safety. Drug testing is done randomly and there is no tolerance for misuse of alcohol on or off the job.

Immigration & Work Permits
The Cayman Islands requires a work permit with the submission of police clearance, chest x-ray, medical clearance and other administrative paper work. Most work permits will be a six month temporary permit. You can only work for the company holding your work permit. Second jobs are not allowed.

General Information
Housing in the Caymans varies in pricing and availability. Most workers share housing.
Transportation to work is the employees responsibility and often can be arranged with coworkers to car pool. There is no public transportation. Bicycles are readily available and safe to ride.
Required personnel wear and tools. All staff are required to wear long pants, steal toe shoes and appropriate professional clothing. No shorts, tank tops, under wear showing or other attire that would affect the image of the company. Plain t-shirts without wording or images is required unless issued by the company.

Vacation is earned over a year of ten days with a shut down of work over the Christmas season for two weeks which is the best timing of vacation for there will be not pay checks for that time period. Sick leave is accured up to 5 days a year and requires an on island doctors release from work for pay for those days.

Pension of 5% is retained form each pay check and the company matches another 5% which is deposited into a pension fund in the Cayman Islands. Health Insurance is required by law for all employees and basic group plan is paid by the company. You can upgrade to premium at a cost that is deducted from your pay.

Pay periods are bi-monthly with work of one period and payments start on the next. Certain advances will be considered in written form for housing, food, and transportation on an individual bases.

There are no income taxes in the Cayman Island and all goods of material and food must be shipped into the island. The duty of goods coming on island is about 25% and is why food and material cost are higher. The Cayman dollar is $1.20 to the US dollar so $16.00 CI is the equivalent of $20.00 US Dollars. So the pay scale of take home income is higher when compared to no income taxes and the conversion of the Cayman dollar.

Valid Divers license and passports must be valid with at least one year before expiring in order to establish the direct deposit of pay checks. A Cayman divers license can be obtained for $90.00 CI with the two forms of identification. Payment of checks to go to the bank will be possible if you are willing to wait in long lines for one two hours.

Your spouse support and children on island. Dependents can accompany work permit holders. If a temporary permit is issued there can no dependents can arrive on island until approved. Schooling for children is about $10,000 to $15,000 a year. Public schools are christian based with biblical teaching and prayer. They do not take work permit holders dependents. Wiring offices are available to transfer funds to family members.

Leaving the Island after you permit expires is required with in 5 days. Obtaining your pension money is a simple form filled out after your permit expires and you show evidence of your transportation off the island. Usually a check is mailed to you 60 to 90 days after your departure.

Understanding Hurricane Preparedness and evacuation: All work permit holders are to have airline tickets for return home if mandatory evacuation is issued. All job sites are prepared three days prior to a potential level three hurricane path directed within 250 miles of the island. This means all equipment secured on all high ground. All possible objects that could become air borne removed or secured on each job site. Note that if a hurricane does occur on the island there can be as much as three months before they will be allowed back on island. During this period the company will not being paying salaries except those already earned and vacation leave. Usually it can take two to four weeks for full banking capabilities and electrical to be restored on island. In each case there is an evaluation of when job sites and projects can be resumed.

Understanding Cayman Law and your rights. Any offence is guilty until proven innocent. Punching a person, DWI, theft or any other offence to a person or property will result in your arrest and termination of your work permit. It would be the individual's responsibility to pay the $5,000 initial fees to Attorneys and provide your own food and shelter for the year it will take to go to court.

Resumes and CV's: Application for employment will need education fo both colleges and professional credentials, list of employers with contact and phone numbers, a list of three references with letter and phone number contact, and will require the personality profile downloaded and completed properly in order to be considered for any position with the company. These can be emailed in Microsoft word format, pdf's or jpg formats. Part of the process for hiring requires work permits be submitted with three different weeks advertisements for employment prior to submittal of a work permit. The hiring of an employee will cost from $500 to $2500 to gain a staff member and rehires the commitment of that future employee. This process of hiring can take from three weeks to three months.
